Twelve Gifts of Handmade Part One or My Favorite Hat

My Favorite Hat

Can I let you in on a little secret? I love the look of watch caps but hate decreasing in pattern, all that "decrease in the purls" far too much to keep track of. Consider this a cheater cap. Also, I like to scrunch my hats over my ears, and the extra wide folded brim allows for plenty of that.

Materials:
Blue Sky Alpaca Sport Weight in Scarlet - 2 skeins held double throughout
Anny Blatt Angora Super in Ruban
US size 9 16" circular needles or size to obtain gauge
US size 9 double pointed needles
stitch marker
tapestry needle

Gauge:
4 stitches to 1 inch

With angora, cast on 80 stitches. Making sure that the stitches are not twisted, join round and place marker. Begin two by two ribbing: knit 2, purl 2. Knit one round. Change to alpaca and continue in rib pattern, until work measures 3 inches.

Work in stockinette stitch until hat measures 7 inches from the cast on edge. Begin decrease round. Change to double pointed needles (or whatever method you prefer) when the stitches become too tight to slide.

round 1 knit 8 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, continue to end
round 2 knit
round 3 knit 7, k2 tog, to end
round 4 knit
round 5 knit 6, k2 tog, to end
round 6 knit
round 7 k 5, k2 tog, to end
round 8 k 4, k2 tog, to end
round 9 k 3, k2 tog, to end
round 10 k 2, k2 tog, to end
round 11 k 1, k2 tog, to end
round 12 k2 tog, to end

Break yarn, making sure to leave an 8 inch tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread yarn through remaining loops, pull tight and knot securely on the inside of the hat. Weave in loose ends.

Please do not copy or distribute pattern without permission. Be nice.

Oh, yay! This looks like just the hat pattern I could knit (and have it turn out ;o). I have knit hats before and not always with the greatest success. I had issues with the decreasing bits which resulted in a version which my sons named "the nipple hat". Yeah, they know just what to say to encourage my fledgling knitting skills. LOL.

Ah this is a pattern I feel I could follow - I am just not good at following instructions! I am totally with you on needing enough hat to cover my ears. Lovely, thank you for sharing.

ok, i DO think i may be able to handle this one :) but if not...can i come crying to you when i need help? xx for those checks :)
